Prospect Watch: The game was delayed by rain by over an hour, and El Paso’s offense stayed inside for most of the night after play began. El Paso scored on sacrifice flies in the first and second innings, but was shut out for the rest of the game. Randy Vásquez, 25, made his third start of the season for the Chihuahuas his best yet, but still needed 77 pitches to get through four innings. Vásquez, who had issued just one walk in his first two starts, struggled to get his curve and changeup into the zone Saturday, walking three and hitting a pair of batters in the cold, wet conditions in Sacramento. The righty who came over in the Soto trade has now allowed 10 earned runs in 11.1 innings on the season, with 13 strikeouts against four walks. … Lake Bachar, 29, who was taken in the fifth round of the 2016 draft and has battled injuries throughout his career, continues to be one of the better stories in the organization in the early going, with another shutout appearance and four more strikeouts. He has allowed one earned across nine innings in five appearances, striking out nine while holding PCL opponents to a .209 average. Bachar’s fastball has good ride at the top of the zone and plays off a slider that consistently tops 2800 RPM. … Clay Dungan, 28, reached base three more times as he continues to put up big numbers early in his first year in the organization. The left-handed hitter, selected from the Royal’s organization in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft, has a .333/.435/.647 slash line with 11 extra-base hits in 13 games, playing primarily third and second base. He posted a .700 OPS across the last two years in the Triple-A International League.

Prospect Watch: In a tie game, with one out in the ninth inning, Connor Hollis hit a line drive that the left fielder misplayed into a triple. After an intentional walk, Hollis scurried home on a wild pitch to score the winning run. … The big story of the night was the Missions’ staff striking out 18 Naturals batters. … Ryan Bergert, making his second start, made good on his preference he told us last year, racking up strikeouts. He pounded the zone with 50 of his 68 pitches for strikes. Bergert, 24, dropped his released point a bit last season, leading to better locations in the zone. This year, he is working on throwing his sweeper and changeup more. … Hollis, who battled injuries in 2023 after winning the Texas League batting title in 2022, is off to an excellent start. The 29-year-old has a .797 OPS, and has already played five different positions in his first seven games.

Game 1: TinCaps 4, Lake County Captains (7 innings)

Key Statistics: RF Tyler Robertson 3-for-4, 2B, RBI; 3B Devin Ortiz 2-for-3, 2 2B, RBI; SS Jarryd Dale 1-for-3, 3B, RBI; CF Homer Bush, Jr. 1-for-4, RBI, SB (5); RHP Dylan Lesko 3 IP, H, ER, 4 BB, 4 K; RHP Will Geerdes 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R BB 2 K HR; RHP Francis Pena (W, 1-0) 1.1 IP H

Game 2: TinCaps 3, Lake County Captains 0 (7 innings)

Key Statistics: LF Kai Murphy 2-for-3, SB; DH Griffin Doersching 3-for-3, 2B, HR (1), 2 RBI; CF Tyler Robertson 1-for-3, 2B, RBI; 1B Albert Fabian 1-for-2, 2B, BB; RHP Henry Baez 4 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 2 K; RHP Joan Gonzalez (W, 1-0) 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 K; RHP Ethan Routzahn (S,1) 1.1 IP, BB

Prospect Watch:  Fort Wayne swept their doubleheader at home to move within a game of evening their record on the season after a slow start. In the opener, down 3-1, the TinCaps rallied for three runs in the final inning, with the coup de grace coming when Tyler Robertson singled in Nic McClaughry for the walk-off win. In the second game, the TinCaps got four innings of shutout ball from Henry Baez, followed by equally strong outings by Joan Gonzalez and Ethan Routzahn. … Dylan Lesko got the start in the opener, and although he only gave one run on a solo homer, he needed 66 pitches to make it through three innings as he walked four, landing only 35 of 66 pitches for strikes. Lack of command has been a theme for Lesko, 20, who walked three in four innings in his first outing, when he needed 53 pitches and only threw 25 strikes. While the changeup remains a devastating weapon, he’s struggled to land his fastball and curve in the zone. Encouragingly, he’s allowed just one hit through his seven innings, but he’ll need to find more consistent control. … Griffin Doersching, 25, continued his hot start with four hits, including a double and his first homer of the season to move his slash line to .360/.448.600 in seven games. Last year, after a disappointing run with the Storm in which he posted just a .770 OPS, his production jumped to a .906 OPS in 14 games with Fort Wayne at the end of the year. Saturday’s was the 25th home run of his professional career. … Baez, 21, has yet to give up a run across six innings in two starts this year, despite five walks against four strikeouts. He was our #20 prospect coming into the year and the 6-foot-3, 200 pound Dominican righty might be the least known to casual fans. He has a fastball in the mid-90s, but last year, made major strides with his changeup. … In addition to his game-winning hit, Robertson, 24, had a pair of two doubles on the day. After starting the year hitless in his first 10 at-bats, he has six hits – four for extra bases – in his last three games.

Storm Rained Out
The rain that delayed games in Sacramento and Los Angeles left the field in Modesto too wet to play on. The game will be made up Sunday as part of a doubleheader.
